Prudencia Ayala (1885-1936)

In 1930- at at time when women still weren’t allowed to vote- Prudencia Ayala, of indigenous heritage, ran for the presidency of El Salvador, making her the first woman in El Salvador and Latin America to do so. She ran on a platform of recognizing women’s rights, women’s suffrage, the recognition of illegitimate children, tackling corruption in public offices, support of labor unions, freedom of religion… really progressive ideas. Eventually the Supreme Court of El Salvador declared her campaign unconstitutional and denied her the right to run for president.
Women were not allowed to vote in El Salvador until 1950.
