Consider the college cafeteria. Remember the black kids table? It was full of people from different families, different states, and different areas of study. Still, they shared culture. They shared laughs. It’s what Nina Simone called “young, gifted, and black.” But what does our culture offer for those kids? BET? Tyler Perry? World Star Hip-Hop? Those things are nice for those who enjoy them, but they tend to alienate a lot of black youth.
The Black Kids Table is a pop culture/entertainment online zine for young, hip, intelligent black youth. Through a mix of short form and long form blogging, The Black Kids Table seeks to look at the world through dark shades. What does that mean exactly? Well, most of the time, it just means we’ll be laughing at stuff, talking about music we love, and commenting on news and politics. With a team of staff contributors, we’ll have fresh content about stuff you love coming to you everyday
That’s not it though. We also want to promote the projects and achievements of young black people. There black people out there creating video games, shooting independent films, and founding internet empires (hint: that last one is us). We want to help them out by discussing, promoting, and reviewing their work. Part of our staff contributors’ job will be to seek out those projects and post about them so you know what our people are up to.
So let’s run it down:
-Original features
-Entertainment commentary
-Music reviews
-Movie reviews
-Celebrity news that’s not absolutely brain melting to read
-Political/news commentary
-Black media promotions
Sounds cool, right?
